Paul faces massive challenge as Joshua dominates scales

Anthony “AJ” Joshua, the two-time unified heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist, asserted a clear physical advantage Friday at the official weigh-in ahead of his highly anticipated bout with Jake “El Gallo de Dorado” Paul at The Fillmore Miami Beach.

Joshua (28-4, 25 KOs) weighed in at 243.4 pounds, overshadowing Paul (12-1, 7 KOs), who came in at 216.6 pounds. The nearly 27-pound difference highlighted Joshua’s size, strength and heavyweight pedigree as the fighters squared off, drawing a strong reaction from fans and media.

The weigh-in also featured fighters from the main and preliminary cards. MVP’s undisputed super featherweight champion Alycia “The Bomb” Baumgardner (16-1, 7 KOs, 1 NC) is set to defend her WBA, WBO and IBF titles after weighing 129.2 pounds for her bout against Canada’s Leila Beaudoin (13-1, 2 KOs), who weighed 130.0 pounds.

In other bouts, Anderson “The Spider” Silva weighed 191.4 pounds and Tyron Woodley 194.0 pounds for their cruiserweight contest, while super featherweights Jahmal Harvey (129.6) and Kevin “El Chino” Cervantes (130.0) both made weight. On the preliminary card, undisputed bantamweight champion Cherneka “Sugar Neekz” Johnson weighed 117.0 pounds and challenger Amanda “Bambola” Galle 117.4 pounds.

Lightweights “Sweet” Caroline Dubois and Camilla Panatta each weighed 134.2 pounds. Strawweight champion Yokasta Valle came in at 104.8 pounds against Yadira “La Reina” Bustillos at 104.6 pounds. Welterweights Avious “Tha Underdog” Griffin (146.4) and Justin Cardona (145.6) both made weight, and cruiserweights Keno Marley (198.6) and Diarra “Gift” Davis Jr. (188.4) completed the card.

Joshua’s imposing weight and championship résumé dominated the proceedings, reinforcing the challenge Paul faces when they meet in the ring. The event will stream live globally on Netflix.
