Nearly a week before the start of the 2026 World Cup, Mexico’s national team got an unexpected visit that packed a punch.
Mexican boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. and World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman made a surprise appearance at the team’s High Performance Center during a private dinner, offering words of encouragement ahead of soccer’s biggest event.
Players and staff were caught off guard when Chavez — one of Mexico’s most celebrated athletes — walked into the room alongside Sulaiman, drawing applause and smiles from the squad.
The visit brought together two of Mexico’s biggest sporting traditions, with both guests speaking about the pressure and pride that come with representing the country on the world stage.
“El Gran Campeón Mexicano” spent time with members of “El Tri’s” coaching staff, including head coach Javier Aguirre and assistant Rafael Marquez, as well as players such as Guillermo “Memo” Ochoa, Johan Vasquez and Jesus Gallardo.
Sulaiman praised the team’s dedication and highlighted the values shared between boxing and soccer, including discipline, sacrifice and resilience.
Meanwhile, Chavez — a former three-division champion and pound-for-pound great — leaned on his own experience competing under intense national expectations, encouraging players to embrace the moment rather than fear it.
“I hear people talking about reaching the fifth match, but I think you can go much further,” Chavez told the team. “You’re going to face tough challenges — I’ve faced them too. Listen to your coach, don’t give up and dream big.”
The former world champion also gifted autographed boxing gloves to players, while the Mexican Football Federation presented Chavez and Sulaiman with personalized jerseys to mark the occasion.
“El Tri” begins its World Cup campaign June 11 when it takes on South Africa in Mexico City. Mexico is one of three host nations for the 2026 World Cup, alongside the United States and Canada.
