Mauricio Sulaimán: some individuals aim to impose themselves with arrogance and abuse of power

The World Boxing Council inaugurated its 63rd Annual Convention alongside the first-ever WBC Muay Thai Convention with a culturally rich opening ceremony at the Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park Hotel in Bangkok. The event began with the thunderous rhythm of traditional Thai drums, setting the tone for a day filled with celebration, recognition, and international unity.

WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán praised attendees for their dedication in making the convention a reality, urging them to cherish the moment. The ceremony continued with an impressive showcase of Klong Sabet Chai drummers, followed by greetings from Muay Thai stars Liam Harrison and Shannon Gardiner.

Iconic boxing champions Oleksandr Usyk and Katie Taylor were then welcomed to the stage.

Usyk expressed his gratitude simply: “My color is green. Mauricio, thank you for what you do. I love it.”

Taylor, attending her first WBC Convention, added: “This is the most prestigious belt. Thank you for giving us this platform.”

Boxing legend Roberto Durán spoke humbly, sharing how emotional it was to see so many champions gathered and recalling the Mexican films he watched growing up, films that now inspire the biopic made about his own life.

Presidential Vision and Legacy

In his address, Mauricio Sulaimán acknowledged challenges facing the organization, noting that some individuals aim to impose themselves “with arrogance and abuse of power.” He reaffirmed: “We are the WBC and we will always be the WBC.”

WBC’s Anti-Drug Awareness Effort

Rocky Herron, a DEA agent with 30 years of service, is leading an expansive WBC drug-awareness program. He has spoken to 287,600 young people, contributing to countless life-saving interventions.

Boxing icon Naseem Hamed appeared on stage with his two sons. Newly named a WBC Ambassador, Hamed praised the significance of the WBC’s iconic green-and-gold belt.

The most emotional moment of the morning came with the presentation of the Lifetime Legacy Award to General Kovid Bhkdjbhumi, revered as the “Father of Muay Thai.” In 2001, he and Don José united to elevate Muay Thai through a solemn oath sworn to the King of Thailand. His son Thanapol, now leading Muay Thai’s global development, accepted the award beside him, saying: “It is a profound honor to receive this. There is an alliance between our two families.”
